Understanding Diversity
The following youth-guided organizations are key collaborators in forging local cultural connections:
New Beginnings helps Lewiston/Auburn area youth in crisis due to unstable or conflictive living situations grow socially and emotionally, build self-respect and lead productive lives. In partnership, New Beginnings, Youth MOVE Maine and THRIVE created a trauma-informed training focused on positive youth development and New Beginnings staff self-care.
Outright L/A creates safe and affirming environments for Lewiston/Auburn area youth age 22 and under who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and/or questioning [LGBTQ]. In partnerships, Outright L/A, Youth MOVE Maine and THRIVE created a trauma-informed training on LGBTQ youth, mental health and safety at school, and delivered it to more than 100 teachers in the Auburn Public School District.
Somali Bantu Youth Association (SBYA) promotes skills building and peer support programs to overcome newcomer challenges. In partnership, SBYA, Youth MOVE Maine and THRIVE have supported cross-cultural wellness, positive youth development and strategic planning.
